The Walmart Zero Waste App
CASE STUDY VIDEO
Problem: Each year 43 billion pounds of food are wasted in US supermarkets. Consumers pick through shelves for food that is the freshest, leaving the rest to go to waste prematurely.
Solution: An app that allows Walmart to get older food off shelves while simultaneously saving consumers money and reducing food waste.

WHEN FOOD GOES TO WASTE, NO ONE WINS
US supermarkets lose about $15 billion annually from unsold fruit and vegetables alone. When customers continually pass over the carton of milk expiring the soonest in favor of one expiring a day later, stores don’t have many options.
Most organizations do not accept expiring food. And even for those that do, stores are reluctant to donate due to legal liability concerns.
Now perfectly good food prematurely goes to waste and the store loses money. All while the price of groceries has skyrocketed for consumers.
AN APP THAT CHANGES IT ALL
The Walmart Zero Waste App, utilizing new ARKit 4 technology, will help shoppers find soon-to-be-expiring items to consume in the next day or so—and save big with massive discounts.
SCAN TO EXPLORE
Once in a Walmart store, simply open the app and point your camera at the shelf with the kind of product you’re interested in buying. All items will be pre-scanned by Walmart so that the app can determine which item on-screen will expire the soonest, highlighting it in AR.
Tap on the highlighted item to discover savings, as well as clear expiration information. The closer to expiring, the bigger the savings!
SAVE EVERYONE FOOD, SAVE EVERYONE MONEY
At checkout, simply click “Done Shopping” and a QR code will appear. The cashier will then scan it, ensuring the discounts you discovered are applied to the eligible items you bought.
Not only will the store and consumer save money, but food waste will be significantly reduced as well.
